Lovely Poems Worthy of Lavish Prizes

Valentine’s Day is one of the more special holidays here at The Hermitage Hotel.  Whether it’s newlyweds checking in for their “Suite Heart Package” or a couple that’s celebrated every anniversary at the Capitol Grille for the first 30 years of their marriage, it’s great to see love in the air.

To honor the day, we had a Valentine’s Day Poetry Contest on our Facebook page—and it was a smashing success.  To enter, contestants had to pen an original poem that pertains to Valentine’s Day, love or romance and post their entry to The Hermitage Hotel Facebook page.  Over 140 poems were submitted, then judged by a panel that included renowned Nashville songwriters Billy Montana and James Hicks.  After much thought and deliberation, Laurie Pearson won a deluxe romance package for two with her poem “Sunday Morning With My Love.”

The prize package includes a night’s stay for two at The Hermitage Hotel, complimentary breakfast, plus champagne, a selection of gourmet chocolates from Godiva in Green Hills Mall and a deluxe Valentine’s Day bouquet from Oshi Florist.

Since there were so many fantastic entries, poets K. S. Anthony, Ryan Parish, Linda McKee Strasburg were named honorable mention.  Each received a complimentary dinner for two at The Hermitage’s Capitol Grille.

The winning poem:

Sunday Morning with My Love by Laurie Pearson

Coffee percolating

Like a calico.

Rain tip-tapping

On the fogged windows

As if it were asking

to be invited inside.

Sunday morning

Nothing to do

But be.

In the stillness of dawn,

Smudgy street lamps

Burn still

in the cold.

But we’re warm

Wrapped up

And cocooned

In the splendor of this day.

I want to send my heartfelt thanks to everyone who entered, and thanks to Godiva in Green Hills Mall and Oshi Florist helping us to make the winner’s stay at our hotel even more special.

As the hotel continues its two-year Centennial Celebration, there will be more chances to win great prizes.  Starting in March, we will use the Facebook page as a platform for a Hermitage Hotel-themed trivia contest.  So log on, search “The Hermitage Hotel” and click the “Become a Fan” tab.

Happy Valentine’s Day,
